We had such a good time in Thailand that we decided that we might leave Mangalore a couple of months early and live there for a while.

Why move to Thailand?

  • Electronic goods are cheap. You can buy the latest gadgets for less than a quarter of UK prices.

  • You can buy pirate ANYTHING. DVDs etc.

  • Thais are not as mad as Indians.

  • The Thai language (they only have one, unlike India) has no tenses.

  • Chicken in a basket.

  • Lovely beaches in the south.

  • You can go out on the streets in the oppressive heat in less than head to toe clothing.

  • If a light breeze happens to blow up your skirt a bit you don't get a crowd pointing at your ankles.

  • They have knitting and crochet shops.

  • Dried cuttlefish and fish sauce.

  • Its possible to do running

  • I'm not the only woman in the bar.

Why stay in Mangalore?

  • Although they are mad, Indian people do make you feel like a king (fisher, ha ha ha) and the quality of service is amazing.

  • Amazing food.

  • Driving around all day on a 1964 Lambretta in the sun with no crash helmet and no traffic lights.

  • We won't get into debt very much as everything is so cheap.

  • We have established a good infrastructure - bank account, mobile phone, home phone, internet access, cable TV account etc.

  • We'd like to buy more stuff for the future that requires local knowledge and good contacts, like custom made furniture, more tailored clothing, solar panel heating, submersible pump and extraction system, custom made barbecue, shop fittings, printed promotional stuff for business use...

  • Life's a cabaret, every hour something peculiar makes you laugh.

  • Its completely different to Western culture.

  • Everywhere we go people know us (in a good way).

  • There's virtually no crime (not including beheading people and putting their heads on sticks).

  • Buying chicken live and frying the liver while its still warm.

  • Everything's brightly coloured.
