Ooty (2200 Metres above sea level)

What a place. Twice the height of Snowdon, which is a mountain in north Wales apparently. A really well needed respite from severe heat and humidity. A mountainous Indian holiday resort set in colonial splendour (that's what it says on the postcards). 23 degrees during the day but down to ten at night. We actually had an electric bar heater in the room.

There is a 'toy' steam train that goes down from Ooty (Udhagamandalam) to Coonoor in the mountains and then down further (to sea level) to Mettupalayam. From 23 degrees to 35 in three and a half hours. On the way, the train calls at Lovedale, Runnymead and Wellington.

In the centre of the town is a racecourse. This is the view of it from our hotel.
The Botanical Gardens. Laid out in colonial times by the bloke who did the Kew ones.
