30 January to 20 February 2003

Colin and Judy kindly came to visit us for three weeks. It was a bit like getting released from prison to have some like minded company. We got a lot done and visited a lot of diverse places and, as usual, drank a lot of beer and ate lots of curry.

They flew into Mumbai so we spent a couple of days there wandering around to places like the Gate of India.  We went to Mumbai's fishing village where it is reckoned 1 million people live in a square mile with little in the way of sewage, roads, water, rubbish clearance etc.  1 million is probably an exaggeration but its certainly densely packed and a world away from the Taj hotel bar 10 minutes walk away.

Dave went shopping for software that day.

Colin and Judy soon got used to Indian rules of the road and razzing around in rickshaws and often challenged us to races.  Whatever team Emma was in always lost.

Both Colin and Judy embraced local style and had several outfits tailor made.  The rest of our days in Mangalore we spent doing everyday things like swimming in the open air pool, eating thalis, drinking pomegranate juice and going to the markets.

We travelled by bone shaking public bus up the Western Ghats to Madekeri, the capital of the coffee and spice region of Coorg, also known as the Scotland of India.  Where we spent a couple of days and had one of the best curries of the holiday.

In Mysore we were all amazed by the fairy tale style Maharajas Palace.  We were lucky as once a week for an hour it is illuminated like Blackpool and our trip by chance included this hour.  After Mysore we went to Ooty and saw more breathtaking scenery on the mountain railway as we descended through the tea terraces to Coimbatore.

Our last trip was up the Karnatakan Coast to Kurangod Island where we were the only guests and ate breakfast overlooking the Arabian Sea.
